What is THCa?
THCa (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) is the naturally occurring cannabinoid found in raw, unheated cannabis plants. In its raw form it is non-psychoactive — it won't get you high on its own. Think of it as THC in its "locked" state: chemically almost identical, but with one extra piece (a carboxyl group) that keeps it from binding to the receptors in your brain.
When THCa is heated — by smoking, vaping, or baking — that extra piece breaks off and THCa converts into Delta-9 THC, the compound cannabis is known for. This conversion is called decarboxylation.

How decarboxylation works

Raw flower is rich in THCa
Fresh, cured hemp flower carries most of its cannabinoid content as THCa, with only trace Delta-9 THC — which is what keeps it federally compliant.

Heat removes the carboxyl group
Lighting, vaping (315–465°F), or oven-baking the flower breaks off the acid group in seconds to minutes.

THCa becomes Delta-9 THC
The converted THC binds to your CB1 receptors, producing effects comparable to traditional cannabis.
